Savage Oakes
Let us introduce ourselves.... We are Elmer and Holly Savage. Along with our two sons, we operate Barrett Hill Farm in Union, Maine. Elmer began farming here in 1985 when the farm was purchased by his parents. Since then, the farm has been home to a flock of sheep as well as Belted Galloway cattle. Today the sheep are gone, but the cattle remain. In 2000, we purchased the 95 acre farm from Elmer's parents and began planning for its future. The desire to preserve the farming tradition here needed to coexist with the financial realities of agriculture. The farm's blueberry fields offered great potential, but the lack of profitability for blueberry growers gave us incentive to look for possible value added products for our crop. We began to explore some of the great blueberry wines being produced. This soon led to the possibility of growing grapes as well. We were impressed by the opportunity to expand into this niche market. We explored vineyards and wineries near and far, and found people willing to help around every corner. In 2002 we planted the first two acres of our vineyard. Since that time, we have expanded to nearly four acres with nine varieties of grapes. We have spent the past nine years growing our vineyard from the ground up and advancing our winemaking from hobby level to small scale commercial production. 2010 marks our fifth vintage. We invite you to follow our progress as we continue to grow. Thanks for visiting. |

Shalom Orchard
We are located high on a ridge with beautiful views surrounding the farm. To the east the sun rises over our East Orchard and the Scoodic mountains; to the south stretches Frenchman's Bay and the mountains of Mount Desert; to the west, the sun sets behind our west orchard and the hills of Dedham & Bangor. We are located about 35 minutes from Bar Harbor and the Nova Scotia ferry, within sight are several beautiful lakes to enjoy water recreation and fishing. Nearby enjoy our lovely woods, or trails to hike the Schoodic Mountains. In the winter, there are ponds for ice-skating, snowmobile trails nearby, and bontiful opportunities for cross- country skiing. The farmhouse dates back to about 1840 adn the farm has been farmed for as long as anyone can remember. An Eposcopal minister gave the name, originally Shalom Farm, back in the 1960's. There is an old photograph of a painting on the barn of a rainbow and doves, the peace message of the era. When we found the farm, the old-timers in the community told us of the old name and we renamed is Shalom Orchard, to reflect the 1000+ apple orchard now established. We adopted the logo, "Peace with nature", as this is our commitment through our organic farming practices. We are a certified organic farm and everything we grow or produce is according to organic standards. We primarily grow organic fruit - apples, blueberries, cherries and raspberries - for our wines or for wholesale or retail sale from the farm. We also grow vegetables for retail sale through our CSA or from our farm store. We raise chickens for eggs and meat, and we raise registered Rambouillet sheep for wool and meat. We have for sale of beautiful yarns, both handspun and organically mill-spun sportweight, both in natural colors and plant-dyed, as well as tanned pelts and fleece. We are committed to educating about organic farming and welcome school groups and tours. We participate in the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners apprenticeship program. We love to share our enthusiasm for what we do. |

Baxter Brewing Company
Located in the historic, Civil War-era Bates Mill Complex in downtown Lewiston, Maine, Baxter Brewing Company is the first and only brewery in New England to package its entire line of beer strictly in metal containers – stainless steel kegs and 12 oz aluminum cans – only. Launched only in January of this year (2011), Baxter Brewing has catapulted onto the Maine Beer scene; selling nearly 5,000 barrels of beer in its first year of business. Currently the company offers two styles of beer: The smooth, easy-drinking session beer Pamola Xtra Pale Ale; and the west coast-style hop monster, Stowaway IPA, which should be the best selling IPA in the state of Maine by year’s end. For more information on where you can find Baxter or how to visit the brewery for tours and free samples, visit www.baxterbrewing.com and www.facebook.com/baxterbrewing. |
Winterport Winery
The Winterport Winery, owned by Michael and Joan Anderson, opened its doors in the fall of 2001 but it really had its beginning in the Christmas gift of a home winemaking kit some 30 years earlier. What was a hobby then has now become a full time work and a family involved business - what used be stored in the family basement now occupies the 3200 sq. ft. winery and 1100 sq. ft. tasting room. Our tasting room is a wonderful place to sample some of our wines. Come also to browse through our retail store and find that unique gift idea such as wine related items or something for that hard-to-shop for person. Come in and meet us. You might see some of the family here or some of our friends who are all part of Winterport Winery. |
